I’m not paranoid.

Yet, I can’t help but look up as I walk along the narrow Beacon Hill sidewalks. What was once just a risk of being hit by falling drips of condensation, is now much bigger. Much heavier in fact.

Just today, while studying for impending midterms, I was abuptly startled from my Accounting trance (or was it a nap?).

“sh*t”
*bang*
*clang*
*THUD*

Part one of the noises was made by my neighbour. Parts two through four were the shouts of freedom expressed by the recently freed window-mounted air conditioning unit as it took off down the metallic fire stairs 2-floors at a time. As I steathly peered outside to confirm the jailbreak, all I could see was my poor neighbour, hanging on to the unceremoniously severed power cord, peering out his now empty window. Shocked. Utterly shocked.
Two stories down, the A/C unit lay. Her freedom short-lived. The stairs were too slow. Missing her cord. Dead.
The takeaway? In these next few months as A/C units are replaced by closed windows, keep your eyes up while giving buildings a wide berth.
